When the decision has been made to embark on any type of construction project most people have an idea. An idea of how the space is to be used, or how the project will look, or connect to an existing structure. Weather the project is an addition, basement make over, deck or kitchen, it all starts with an idea.
The next step is to convey the idea onto paper in the form of working drawings or plans. It is at this point, when the idea begins to come to life. The drawings will allow you and your contractor the ability to visually live your idea and dream. By conveying your idea to drawings you now have established a level playing field from which you can secure multiple bids
Without plans and specifications the bidding process can be daunting. You are left with each individual contractor’s interpretation of your idea. This can lead to inaccurate bids and extra time on your part analyzing each bid to be sure everything is in place. This is not to say that contractors don’t have good ideas; and you can use these ideas, but by having a base point (plans and specifications) you have established a foundation from which to build. For any project to run efficiently there must be a foundation and an open line of communication. Detailed plans and specifications help to facilitate good communication and a smooth construction process.
